An IP address is a unique number, much like a phone number, that is used by machines (usually computers) to connect with each other when sending information over the Internet or a local network using the Internet Protocol (IP). It allows the machines that send the information to know where to send it, and the machines that receive the information to know that it comes from the intended destination.
